1997年7月1日，是個喜慶的日子，也是重要的裏程碑。十五年前的這一天，香港回歸祖國懷抱，從此掀開了香港曆史新的一頁。在這個具有曆史意義的重要日子，電視廣播有限公司與康樂及文化事務署于六月三十日晚上，合辦一場《慶祝香港回歸祖國十五周年文藝晚會》，以此獻給祖國和香港，共同分享回歸15周年的喜悅。屆時，來自全國各地的歌星、音樂家、藝術團體彙聚一堂，爲觀衆呈現精采絕倫的歌舞與表演，用歌聲祝願祖國更加繁榮、香港明天會更好、各民族更團結和諧。

為慶祝香港回歸15周年的煙花匯演會於7月1日晚上八時；在維港上空綻放。這次煙花匯演會以「璀璨傳奇 再創輝煌」為主題，藉此歌頌香港繁榮安定並心繫祖國，更希望未來可再創輝煌。最特別是在第一幕「璀璨傳奇」中會首次出現「HK十五」字樣的煙花。壓軸一幕更會以「紅太陽」和「紅波浪」煙花舖滿維港上空。總共分為九幕不同主題的匯演歷時23分鐘，5萬枚煙花分別首次在躉船及香港島的9幢商業大廈樓頂同步登放，兩者互相輝映...
